Circulator route across the Anacostia River sought

D.C. Council member Kwame R. Brown (D-At Large) wants the District to extend a Circulator bus route across the Anacostia River down to the Maryland line.

The Circulator buses do two important things: They move people across core parts of the District that need better transportation service and they encourage development of neighborhoods. None of the routes operates east of the Anacostia.

Brown wants the council to endorse extending Circulator service from the Barracks Row and Navy Yard area across the Anacostia and down Pennsylvania Avenue SE to Southern Avenue.

Big Chair Coffee Shop Opens in Anacostia

During the biggest recession since the Great Depression, a local Ethiopian family is bucking the trend. They are poised, Monday morning, to open a new coffee shop.

And they’re choosing to do it in Washington, D.C.'s neighborhood of Anacostia.

Big Chair Coffee is located across the street from the landmark Big Chair which has been part of the landscape in Anacostia since 1959. The 19.5-foot-tall chair was erected as an attention-getter for a furniture company.

Ayehubizu Yimenu and her children researched the need for a coffee shop and found that Anacostia had none of the relaxing lounges that exist in parts of the city. They will sell small lattes for about two dollars a cup, while offering a cozy lounge, finger food, and free wireless service for notebook computers.

“You know, coffee first came from Ethiopia,” explained Ms. Yimenu, who works full time as a registered nurse. Her shop will offer coffee grown in her native country, as well as other blends.

Big Chair Coffee will open Monday at 7:00 a.m. on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue – right across the street from the Big Chair.

New DC 5 cent Bag Tax To Clean the Anacostia River Begins

By BETH PARKER/myfoxdc

D.C. residents are getting creative about how they transport their groceries. The D.C. bag fee took effect January 1.

Bring your own reusable bags to a store and you'll pay no additional fees. But paper and plastic bags will cost a customer five cents each. Some of the money goes to the retailer. Most will be spent cleaning up the Anacostia River.

It doesn't just apply to grocery stores. It's any business that sells food or alcohol.

The D.C. bag law can be complicated, especially when it comes to restaurants. Here's how it works. If a restaurant has what is called a "deli license" and has no seating, customers must pay whether they leave with a paper or plastic bag. But if you leave a sit-down restaurant with take-out or a doggie bag and it's in a paper bag, you're exempt. You don't have to pay the extra five cents. If you leave with a plastic bag, you have to pay.

D.C. says there is a bottom line. Bring your bags.

Maryland Delegate Al Carr and Virginia Delegate Adam Ebbin now say they will soon introduce bills that mirror the D.C. law.
